The Dos and Dont’s of Interviewing

Dos and Don't of Interview meeting

As many of you are considering hiring for your summer needs, we thought this topic could be helpful for you! Here are some things to ask and not ask during a client interview.

DON’T ask about the following: Race, color, religion, national origin, marital status, disability, weight, gender, age, height, arrest record, sexual orientation, veteran status, about organizations unrelated to job

DON’T ask: Are you married? Do you have kids?

DO: Describe job requirements and ask if the candidate anticipates any problems meeting those.

DON’T ask: What is your religious affiliation?

DO: Describe your company culture, work requirements, and ask if they see themselves as a good fit for the company or if they see themselves working at your company long-term.

DON’T ask: Are you a US citizen?

DO ask: If you’re hired, can you provide proof of your authorization to work in the US?

DON’T ask: Do you have any disabilities? How many days were you sick and absent from work?

DO: Ensure they are aware of the prerequisites for the job and ask if they can perform them with or without reasonable accommodations.

DON’T ask: What does your current position pay?

DO: Ensure that the candidate understands the offer (compensation and benefits) and whether it is negotiable or not.

It’s best practice to provide your candidates with a job description during or before their interview. This practice will give you, as the employer, the opportunity to ask if the candidate can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations of or not.
