How To Run a WIG Session

Wildly Important Goal WIG meeting

Earlier, we wrote about creating Wildly Important Goals as a part of the Four Disciplines of Execution (4dx). This system has transformed our team’s productivity! By focusing some time and energy, as little as 20%, you are setting yourself up for development on the most important goal!

One of the four disciplines is execution is creating a cadence of accountability through weekly WIG sessions. When we’ve consulted with clients who are practicing 4dx, we get a lot of questions about how to run effective WIG sessions. Here is a quick summary of good WIG sessions. If you need help with yours, we’re here for you.

WIG sessions are quick 20–30 mins with have the same agenda:

  • Account: Report on individual commitments made the previous session

  • Review the scoreboard: Learn and problem-solve

  • Plan: Make new commitments.

The goal is to have dedicated time to discuss and spur one another towards achieving your WIG. Without these dedicated times, your team can get so consumed in your whirlwind that you have a hard time advancing your wildly important goal. One of the examples the book gives is that a high-ranking executive measured the effectiveness of his team simply by asking how long their WIG session is!

At these WIG sessions, each team member should commit a commitment by the next meeting. Each of these commitments must be something objective and deliverable. They aren’t just commitments to spend a certain amount of time on a topic. They are commitments to achieve all or a make a significant step towards accomplishing a lead measure. 4dx gives this helpful question for team members “What are the one or two most important things I can do this week to impact the team’s performance on the scoreboard?” All commitments are personal commitments and need to be completed within a week. Consistency is the most important thing of these meetings.
