Beat the Midday Slump

Avoiding midday slump

Anyone who has worked in an office environment knows what it feels like to hit that midday slump. Various factors can affect our energy levels, such as what we are putting in our bodies and how much sleep we get at night. Often, the result of these things can be decreased energy and, likewise, reduced productivity at work. Don’t despair, though! There are ways to combat this process and to make the most of your work days.

Here are 5 ways to beat the midday slump:

  1. Optimize Your Sleep

An average healthy adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep per night in order to reach peak functioning. Unfortunately, more than half of us are falling short in the sleep quota. Resultantly, more than half of employees are struggling with mental fatigue, memory lapses and concentration. Sleep is important for overall health and work productivity.

2. Adjust Your Diet

Actively counteract afternoon slumps by eating foods that are lower in carbohydrates and contain less sugar. Start out your morning with protein heavier foods and decline sugary options. Include more fresh salads, vegetable dishes, and lean fish for lunch options. Snacking on nuts will enhance digestion and makes you less lethargic.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drink more water. Dehydration causes tiredness, poor concentration, and sleepiness. More hydration can help keep energy levels up. Aim for at least one glass of water for every hour that you are working. It might feel like a lot but once you make it a habit, you’ll find your energy improved.

3. Power Nap

As already mentioned, so many people do not optimize the recommended sleep we need. Rather than being sleep-deprived and clouded, a short 15-20 minute nap can make a substantial impact for adults. It is a great way to let go of some of the stress of the day, heighten alertness, and improve performance.

4. Exercise Daily

Exercise and moving the body can help maintain energy levels throughout the day. If a daily workout is not a convenient option, taking a few breaks at work and going for a walk (even indoors) can help with productivity.
